He went to Jared

he went to jared
Okay, so he went to Jared like 4 years ago! But, we do go back every 6 months for our bi-annual inspection! A few times they have actually found a loose diamond or two. I am so grateful for the warranty from Jared.  Could you imagine how much it would cost if I had to replace one or more of my princess cuts! I also really enjoy how my rings sparkles after they clean, buff, and rhodium plate them!

I tried to capture this in the photo below, but please understand, I lack the camera gear to really get a great photograph! But, I think you can clearly see the difference. The first photograph, the ring is severely scratched up and even has a few dings in it. The second photograph shows what a difference my visit to Jared made! You can see that the ring is much more vibrant and shiny. I can even see my reflection!

Anyhow the moral of the story is that I highly recommend purchasing a warranty on your expensive jewelry. I also would recommend sticking with the maintenance schedule. It's so worth it! Thanks Jared! -Ruth-

Update: Blog Redesign

Ruth Reyes

Hey folks! I don't know if I should call it a redesign or a face-lift, but it is going well! I still have a bit of work to do, like re-size, crop, and code 3 more archive pages, update several pages, design new follow buttons, and create new advertising and f.a.q. pages! Woah, when I put it that way I feel like I still have a ton more work to do! But, I will not focus on that! I will focus on what I have done so far! Have a looksey!

Updating archive pages. Instead of having the my archives link to a search label like this one, I have coded pretty new pages to showcase my work so far! This is so exciting for me. It also helps me see where the gaps are! Great for planning new posts! Now, this new look will create more work in the future. But, I think if I set a date once every few weeks, I can keep the archives up to date!

New Reader page...I've created a fun page for newbies. I've been getting a lot of them, like I mentioned in this post.  I have showcased a mini-archive of what I blog about, as well as some of the most viewed posts. I also included some social media links on the bottom of the page!

I have also updated the About Me and Contact pages. I am working hard to keep a cohesive look to this space. I am also hoping that what I come up with will stay current for some time and be easy to transition into another "look" as the blog grows! Well, that's all for now! Hope you're having a great weekend! -Ruth-

Change...

Isn't that Sew

I know it has been quiet around here as of late. First, we had family in town for a week. Then, Mark and I were sick...for 2 whole weeks! And we spent this past weekend laying sod in our yard. Whew! It's been a busy month I tell ya'. It might continue to stay quiet around here for a bit. I currently have plenty in the works to keep me busy for months. You may have noticed the many design changes happening around here. I am really trying to design something that I am both happy with and that will stay current for a decent length of time. It's funny, because I design for other people a l l  d a y  l o n g and I find it hard to design for myself these days.  Interesting how that works!

With all that said, I am working on first completing the "official" blog design, logos, buttons, etc. As well as coding the archives, about me, FAQ, and advertising pages. Once I complete these tasks, I have even bigger tasks! I have new post series in the works. Here's a hint, it actually has to do with sewing and pattern-making! Ha! Hence, Isn't that Sew. I will be dedicating a lot more time to the blog. I've decided to do so because some of my recipes and tutorials have seen a lot of traffic thanks to sites like Pinterest, and The Gawkverse, as well as fellow blogger referrals. I didn't think this little blog would grow, but I'll be darned. It's happening, and with little effort.

So, I've decided that I would love for some of these visitors to stick around for a while and since I love this  creative outlet so much, I've decided to dedicate a lot more of my time to this space. Since I started this blog in June of 2012, I've spent very little time, maybe 1 hour a week, max on projects for Isn't that Sew. I will definitely be tripling, if not quadrupling that number in the upcoming months and I'm so excited about it!

So, in the meantime....I'll be working hard! Happy Spring y'all! -Ruth-

Spring 2013

Isn't that Sew

Well, I think it's safe to assume Spring has officially sprung here in North Texas. Our temperatures have been a bit higher than average the past few days (low 80's). But, I think this warming trend is here to stay!  The average temperatures for Dallas during the month of March are in the upper 60's, low 70's after all! I'm so excited to see the flowers blooming and the trees turning green. It always seems to happen overnight. Summer time, here we come! Happy Weekend y'all!! -Ruth-

Gluten/Grain-Free Paleo Cupcakes

Grain Free Cupcake
Paleo CupcakeGluten-Free Desserts
Paleo Desserts

Okay. Okay. Some folks would say that I shouldn't be trying to make Paleo treats. But, I couldn't help myself. Some members of the Paleo Community think that it goes against the grain to try to recreate foods that are unhealthy, ie cupcakes. In fact, some think that if you want something that isn't Paleo, you should probably just cheat and have the real deal. While, I agree with that statement, I don't always think it is necessary to cheat. For example, Zucchini Lasagna or Philly Cheese-steak stuffed peppers.  Recreating with out the cheating! I see nothing wrong with this. In fact, I am all for recreating our favorite foods in a healthy way. A year ago, I never would have thought to make a lasagna using zucchini. Turns out, I prefer it over traditional lasagna. It has the same great taste, but leaves me without the stomach ache. Win, win. Right?

I made 2 versions of the topping, one is a traditional Paleo version and the other is a dairy-version. Some Paleo folks introduce things like dairy, beans, or even potatoes back into their diet after a period of detoxification. I am one of those people. While I do not eat dairy often, I occasionally will have some heavy whipping cream or Parmesan cheese. I don't believe in limiting myself so much, that I begin to focus on the things that I "eliminate" from my diet. Enough back story, let's make some Paleo, Gluten-Free, cupcakes!

350° || 20 minutes
Chocolate Paleo Cupcakes
 Yields 6-8 cupcakes

1/4 cup coconut flour
3-4 tbsp. cocoa
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. baking soda
3 large eggs
1/2 cup liquid sweetener ie maple syrup, agave nectar, or honey
Optional: dairy-free chocolate chips

Combine all dry ingredients and mix thoroughly. Next, add liquid ingredients and combine very well leaving no lumps. You can use a mixer, but I just used a whisk. Fill your cupcake liners 1/2 full and bake 350º for 20 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

Paleo Chocolate Frosting
 1/2 cup coconut oil
2-3 tbsp liquid sweetener
1/4 cup cocoa
1-2 tbsp. coconut milk

Combine all ingredients and combine well. Note: this frosting will melt if left at room temperature too long.

Whipped Dairy Topping
 1 cup heavy whipping cream
2 tbsp. liquid sweetener

Combine all ingredients and whip until soft peaks.

DIY Clothespin Candle

Clothespin Candle Supplies:
20 clothespins
 small piece of cardboard
 1 tuna can (or similar)
permanent markers in various colors
tea light,
pencil
ruler

First, pin clothes pins to cardboard. I did this in two steps because my cardboard was a bit too small. Then, sketch your design onto the clothespins. Next, color the pins using your permanent markers. Repeat process on opposite side of pins. Lastly, simply clip the pins onto the aluminum can and drop in your tea light! The possibilities are endless with this simple DIY project because it is so simple to decoupage the aluminum can and clothes pins, dye the wood, or even wood burn or carve shapes into them. But, I'll save those tutorials for another day! -Ruth-

Family Weekend

Isn't that Sew
Isn't that Sew
Well, this past week was a busy one! Two of my brother-in-laws spent the last 5 days in Texas! My husband and I love to have company. It's so nice when we have visitors, since we usually only see the fam once or twice a year! We enjoyed the nice weather, watched a NASCAR race, and ate some really yummy food! So, needless to say  I was super busy last week, hence my absence. I hope to return to some regularly scheduled program within the next week or so. Happy Monday! -Ruth-
