Easy like a Sunday Morning...

Top (Lucky) Shorts (Thrifted) Belt (Fossil)
Necklace (Sam Moon)  Shoes (Laura Ashley)

Sunday is definitely my most favorite day of the week for a few reasons. Number one, it is a day of worship, number two, it is a day of rest, and number three, Sunday is the only day of the week that me and the hubs get to spend any kind of quality time together. Our work schedules can be very demanding and we have to remember to cherish the moments we can really be together, without all the stress of the daily grind. I have to constantly remind myself to enjoy the ride and be present in the here and now.

Zero Waste; Fashion Repatterned

No Waste Patternmaking

Wearing the skirt myself

In school, I took a really amazing class with a really awesome instructor, Arti Sandhu. Boy, did she challenge me! She was not about to let me stay safe and make classic clothing! The class was called, Fashion; Theory and Practice. The challenges that Arti came up with were not only challenging, but they were relevant. The class was almost like a season of Project Runway! The class was very conceptual; we studied how Fashion embodies the Zeitgeist, or the Spirit of the times.  I remember discussing how wasteful "fast" fashion can be, how fashion is ever changing, never static. Needless to say, the class was very inspiring.

I just wanted to share with you the third project I completed during the class, Zero Waste; Fashion Re-patterned. My garment was chosen to be featured in the windows on Wabash Ave. in conjunction with the show........... What an honor!

What I did was take several yards of vintage fabric I found in my mom's basement and create a pencil skirt. The Challenge; Having zero fabric waste!!! So, I did not make one single cut into the fabric! I simple sewed darts on top and bottom, and stitched in a zipper. Simple, yet effective!

The process....

Video of Arti talking about the Exhibit.

The Exhibit featured on ABC news.

What do you think about "fast" fashion and it's impact on our environment?

Cheddar Biscuit Breakfast Sandwich

Remember this? I found another use for them other than just devouring them because they are so tasty! Introducing the cheddar biscuit breakfast sandwich! Let's just say they were amazing! I simply sliced the biscuit in half, added a scrambled egg, and a turkey sausage patty. The warmth from the patty and egg melted the cheese in the center of the biscuit....mmmhmmmm...Tasty.

Places and Spaces; Waco, Texas

Waco Suspension Bridge
Hey y'all! Just wanted to share a few snipitz from our last minute trip to Waco, Texas last Friday. I had to meet one of the salesmen from my company *halfway* to deliver some football jerseys. My boss happened to be in New Zealand (his birthplace) and the other salesmen happen to be in Houston for the week, meaning, I was next in line!!! It was tons of fun though. Mark, Sophee, and I took a ride down that way, stayed the night, and headed back the next afternoon.

I plan on sharing a full post in the near future, until then...............

Wow, what a beautiful day! It's a sunny 80° with a gentle breeze, and not a cloud in the sky, what could be more picture perfect! Still loving North Texas weather...

Enjoy the rest of your day!

Feather Earring ; 3 (alternative) ways to wear them

I have mentioned before my love for feathers and I LOOOOOVE the feather earring. However, I just feel like the full feather earring looks good on me, well at least in my ears anyway. So, what do I do? I wear them in alternative ways. Check it out, I've shared several ways here, here, and here!

Cheddar Biscuits

1 box garlic biscuit mix
grated cheddar/parmesan
oregano/garlic powder
cubed cheddar
milk

This weekend I made some good stuff; Homemade Chili, Hot Wings, and Cheddar Biscuits!!! Yum....Well, I guess this recipe is more like cheddar muffins since I used a muffin pan!!!!

This is what I did....

Follow the directions on the package. Add extra garlic powder and oregano to taste. Then, add the cheese! I like to add a cube of cheddar right in the center,  leaving gooey goodness! And add some more to the top for color and texture!

Hem your jeans-Original hem

How to Hem Jeans
Are you short? Me too. Need to hem nearly every pair of jeans you purchase? Me too. I put together this little photo-torial to show you how I like to hem my jeans. I prefer to keep the original hem. Honestly, it takes me about 10 minutes from start to finish! Anyone with a sewing machine can easily hem their own jeans. And yes, even a novice seamstress! It really is that easy!

Click the photo below to enlarge.

1. Try on your jeans and flip up the excess. Make sure to try them on with the shoes you intend to wear. Pin in place. TIP:Always make sure to wash the jeans first to avoid any shrinkage after hemming.  Measure from the original hem to the fold and record your measurement. (These jeans needed to be hemmed 1 inch) Take your measurement and divide it in half. (  1" / 2  =  1/2" ) Re-pin jeans using your new measurement. While still folded, stitch the jeans as close to the original hem as possible.  Press the excess fold toward the waistband. Stitch in the ditch on both side and inseams. Make sure to keep the excess fold in place. -Ruth-

Places and Spaces; Goodwill

Goodwill

Hey guys! I just wanted to share one of my favorite places with you, none other than Goodwill. I stopped by on my way home from work and found quite a bit of good stuff! My favorite find was the inspirational plaque. I hung it in my bathroom so that every morning I can look at it and go about my day with intention. I also love this nifty little picnic basket. It comes with 2 wine glasses, cork screw, bottle stopper, 2 cloth napkins, and best part, it's insulated! Happy thrifting!

Caramel Macchiato

Lately, all of the blogs I read have been really excited about Fall. Well, I have been finding myself unable to relate. Maybe it is because the temperature has been soaring to 105 degrees everyday! Until this past weekend! When I woke up it was in the mid 60's, really feeling like Fall. I think I finally may have caught the Fall fever! So, in honor of the upcoming season, I decided to try my hand at a homemade caramel macchiato! Enjoy!
1/2 cup fresh espresso
4 oz. steamed milk (reserve froth)
1 oz. homemade vanilla syrup
Caramel syrup to taste

**You can substitute espresso for really strong coffee, ie from a french press. Also, you can steam milk in the microwave!

Four Simple Goals (before 2013)

I've decided to join in on Elsie, over at a A Beautiful Mess, Four Simple Goals (before 2013) Challenge! I am really excited about this! Because, much like Elsie, I love to make lists! I feel like I accomplish so much more when I have a list...

1. Read and Ellipticise more frequently. This is something that I have been trying to make habitual for like, uh...ever! I always find myself to"busy" and manage to find time not to ellipticise (elliptical exercise) To be honest, I very much enjoy this activity. I love catching up on articles in Whole Living Magazine, or watching sermons from Traders Point Church in Indianapolis, IN while gliding along on my elliptical! This season, I will intentionally spend more time using this machine and reading on my Nook.
2. Cook healthy dinner options. I always eat super healthy for breakfast and lunch. But, come dinner time, I often find myself reaching for the quick fix, ie frozen pizza or Thai take out. Now, since moving to our new home, I've done much better with cooking healthy dinner. Probably because my kitchen is no longer in a box. But, I am hoping to cultivate another habit, creating simple, healthy meals that nourish my families bodies!
3. Sew something. I mean, I do have an apparel design degree after all! No more excuses! I will be draping and drafting patterns to create myself some new Spring/Summer pieces!
4. Create handmade decorations to complete our new home. We have a lot more room here in our new home, and that means a lot of unfinished spaces! I have tons of ideas to fill some of those voids and can't wait to get started.

I will be posting an update toward the end of the year to track my progress for this challenge. I plan to document my progress cultivating simple, healthy habits through posting some of the new recipes I come up with, I will share my process of creating myself a few new pieces, and I will definitely share some fun DIY phot-orials showcasing my fun handmade home project! Stay  -Ruth-
