Nutella Mousse

Chocolate Mousse
Nutella Mousse you say? That's crazy talk. And yes, it's true. Okay, you got me...I'm not totally sure this recipe qualifies as a  mousse. But, whatever you call it, it's really, really good. And, it totally happened by accident. A happy accident of course. It's so simple, this is what I did...

Sublimation KNOCKOUT Sportswear

Sublimated Athletic apparel
Happy Monday y'all! It's raining here in North Texas, but it's kinda nice because it will keep everything green...for now. I wanted to share with you some of my recent day job work. I know I don't talk much about my day job here on the blog. I did mentioned it a bit in this post.  I guess I'm not really sure what to say about it. I guess I could say that I design sublimated athletic apparel. Sublimation is a process of transforming a solid to a gas, while bi-passing the liquid stage. Basically, we create our designs in Adobe Illustrator using vector artwork and Pantone colors. Once the customer approves the design, I create production artwork that is sent directly to the sublimation printer. I "clip" the designs directly into the full scale pattern using  Illustrator. The  machine prints the patterns and designs at full scale directly onto special paper.. The paper is placed onto the fabric and heat transferred to the material. It impregnates the fibers, leaving vibrant color that will never fade, crack, or peel. Then, the factory cuts and assembles the gear. It's really kind of neat how the whole process works.

Some of my other duties include, designing and drafting patterns for new styles, creating marketing materials and catalogs, photographing gear, social media, updating the website, and even attending events! What can I say, I guess I'm a jack of all trades (but the master of none)  in real life and at work....-Ruth-

Cold Brew II - Japanese Iced Coffee

Japanese iced coffee
Iced coffee. I'm at it again, to find the perfect recipe for making Iced Coffee at home. I usually use this method for making cold brewed coffee. But, when I found this video by Counter Culture Coffee I was desperate to try it out for myself. I adapted method to be used for a drip coffee maker and I doubled up on the recipe. And guess what, it tasted awesome. And it was really easy. Check out the video and recipe below...

Japanese  Iced Coffee
16 ounces of water
2 ounces of Coffee
16 ounces of Ice

First, I ground the coffee in my conical burr grinder. I measured out two ounces of grounds and added them to the coffee maker as usual. Next, I measured out my water and ice. I added the ice directly to the coffee pot and filled the water tank as usual. I brewed the coffee and in a couple of minutes I had amazingly sweet iced coffee. I will definitely be doing this again! If you love coffee as much as I do, you should give it a try! -Ruth-

Dog in a Diaper...

dog in a diaper
Okay, I am about to get real. My dog isn't fixed. I think we might need to have that done. We don't know how old she is since we literally found her on the street. Our best guess is three to five. Anyhow, we found out she wasn't spayed the hard way when she suddenly went into heat for the first time. I must say, it's quite the event. The hardest part about it isn't what you might think. It's seeing her in such distress. I feel so bad. Poor baby girl. I made her this doggie diaper to keep our white carpet clean during her bi-yearly. I think it's adorable with the little puppy paw prints. Turned out pretty well if you ask me!

We are going to look into having this procedure done at her next visit to the Vet. As much as I do not want to put her through surgery, I think it might be the best option for both her and us. Do you have any experience fixing older dogs? I would love to hear about it. -Ruth-

*UPDATE* Sophee has since had her surgery (September 2013) and everything went smoothly. We also got another rescue pup a month later! Have a look at him HERE!

Life is...||Busy||

life is busy quotes
Life is...Busy and messy, no? Sometimes, I'm not sure how to juggle it all. I work a full-time job, have a wonderful husband and pup to spend time with, have a blog to tend to, working toward opening a jewelry shop, have household chores, and lets not forget that body to take care of. I know. I know. It's almost the story of everyone life (ever). Over the last few years, I have come to realize that, TODAY is the most important day of your life. So, I want to know...how do you handle it all? How to you relax and make time for yourself and love one's while still getting stuff done?  -Ruth-

Homemade Coconut Body Scrub

body butter
I love body and lip scrubs. And, I love all things homemade. This recipe for homemade coconut body scrub is super simple and only takes minutes to make. I know homemade scrubs are nothing new, but I made this scrub over the weekend and thought...why not share it. I love how smooth coconut oil leaves my skin after shaving. And since it's summer that means there will be a lot of that happening over the coming months. Here's what you will need...

Homemade Coconut Body Scrub
Small mason jar or similar container
1/4 cup coconut oil
1/2 cup sugar
*I added 1/4  cup  plus 1 tbsp. to make my scrub a bit more moisturizing.

It is important that the coconut oil be in liquid form. Since it's currently warm in my house, it was already in a liquid state. So, I didn't need to warm it up. But, if it's in solid form, you can place the jar in a saucepan and heat with water. To make the scrub just add the liquid oil to the sugar and mix! That's it! I'll tell ya' coconut oil is amazing. Not only is it great for sugar scrubs, but I use it to cook (it's uber healthy), in my hair, and uh...other stuff. I can't rave enough about it. I'm not a huge fan of some of the other coconut products, but the oil is where its at. Give the stuff a try!

The scrub might separate or harden a bit, but no worries. It will still still work just fine.... This stuff makes great gifts! You can also try adding some essential oils to the concoction to add a delightful fragrance. My favorites are tea tree, lavender, and lemon! -Ruth-

Insta-recap || May

Instagram

Another month complete. Wow, I cannot believe that May is over and it is now June! What happened to Spring???!!! It was unseasonable cold here in Texas through most of the Spring and than BAM! Now, it's officially summer weather. Oh well, I'm not complaining. Or am I? Either way, it's warm now and that makes me happy!

If you don't already follow along in Instagram, you should! Why, you ask? Because Instagram is awesome! It's by far the coolest social media outlet, ever! Yes, that's right. I love taking photos with my smart phone. I've officially come to the other side. I've had a smart phone for what, six months now...and I already can't imagine life without it...Oh, technology

And speaking of technology, my computer at work may have been out sick for a week, but it's officially back up an running beautifully! And I knocked it out of the park and caught up on all my work. And, I still left by three on Friday afternoon! It's like, I didn't miss a beat! Happy Day y'all! -Ruth-

One year...

One year anniversary
Today is Isn't that Sew's one year anniversary! I feel like it has taken me the entire year to sort of get into the groove of blogging. It has been an indecisive road to design and format, and it's still no where near where I'd like it to be. Though, I've mastered simple coding in the process! I am still learning the in's and out's & the do's & don'ts of the blogshere. I am still working through finding my blog "voice" and my blog "style". I am discovering who visits the blog vs. who sticks around for awhile. I am realizing what types of posts I am best at creating and I am working towards creating more of them. I've decided in the past dedicated more time to the blog, and now shop! It's been crazy and exciting to say the least and I still have a lot of work ahead of me.

I hope to take Isn't that Sew to a whole new level in year two with new, fresh ideas and an upcycled jewelry shop! I blog because I love it. I love taking photographs, sharing bits & pieces of my life with old friends and family back home, and the new one's I've met along the way through blogging. I love following your lives and blogs too. You are all such and inspiration and have helped me regain bits of myself that I've lost along the way. It's so rewarding to engage in a community of like minded folks.

Starting this site really has helped me through our second year in Texas. I love living in Texas, and I will never look back. But, it can be tough being so far from where you grew up, close friends, and family and on top of that changing careers in my late 20's (Mark has also changed career paths). Mark and I still have a lot of work to do to plant roots and grow here in Texas. But, I wouldn't change a thing. So, thank you to all of you who have followed along on our journey. It' means a lot. Just know, you've all helped me in creating that journey. Thank you. -Ruth-
